Michael Gen, MD

Michael Gen, MD, FACC, FSCAI, FASNC, is a board-certified cardiovascular specialist who completed his training at the University of Colorado and Brown University’s Rhode Island Hospital. He has more than 20 years of experience with expertise in interventional cardiology, structural heart disease, vascular disease and intervention, heart failure, lipid management, nuclear cardiology, pacemaker placement, and rhythm management. Dr. Gen has devoted his career to preventing and reversing heart disease and is highly trained in several cardiac specialties.
As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Gen adopted the radial artery approach early on, reducing risk and expediting recovery for his patients. He performs complex revascularization often averting the need for heart surgery. He has been involved with structural heart disease since the early stages of its approval, performing TAVR and Mitra-Clip, and has experience closing PFOs and ASDs without surgery.
He has expertise with vascular disease treating patients with both arterial and venous disease, and has been performing revascularization with balloons and stents in the legs, kidney arteries, and abdominal arteries helping avoid surgery. He treats symptomatic varicose veins with ablation and spans patient care from diagnosis with ultrasound to medical management and percutaneous revascularization.
Dr. Gen is trained to place pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders helpful for patients undergoing investigation and treatment of syncope, atrial fibrillation, cryptogenic stroke, and other rhythm disorders. He performs atrial appendage occlusion with the Watchman device providing patients an alternative to anticoagulation for stroke prevention. He strives to make sure his patients feel better, live longer, and maintain their ability to pursue that which makes them happy. His goal has always been to explain, educate, discuss, and simplify treatment options that make it easy for patients to understand and play an active role in their health care.
Besides the many invasive and interventional procedures to treat cardiac and vascular disease, his passion remains plaque reversal and disease prevention. He has been involved in research investigating medication to treat lipids and heart failure, giving him a deep understanding of the many options and nuisances of treating these complex problems with medication.
Dr. Gen is a member of multiple professional organizations. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Angiography and Coronary Intervention, and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his work. During his cardiology fellowship, he received both the Outstanding Clinical Fellow and Outstanding Research Fellow awards. Over the years he received awards from his patients, has been called a Top Doctor and in 2017 was awarded the Heart and Stroke Physician of the Year from the American Heart Association. He was elected to serve as Chief of staff, Chief of cardiology, and Chief of peripheral vascular and served as Governor for his chapter of the California Medical Association. He has helped train residents and fellows and has been on staff as an adjunct associate professor at Stanford and UCSF.
He now lives in Virginia Beach with his family. He spends much of his time watching his children play tennis, and musical instruments, and enjoys participation in the community. Virginia Beach offers him everything he enjoys most, from appreciation of the warm family lifestyle, the food, the proximity to the water, hiking, photography, to fishing.

What Our Patients Say About Heart & Vascular Group.

“The Best Doctor Ever!”

It’s been said first impressions are everything. I couldn’t have asked for a better first visit. Everyone was professional, kind, and helpful. The nurse helping me immediately made me feel at ease. Dr. Gen listened to my concerns and took the time to explain what testing was needed. Thank you for making my visit a pleasant experience.

“I Was Very Impressed”

I had my first visit today. My husband and I were very impressed with Dr. Gen. He was very pleasant, explained things clearly and patiently, and was also very reassuring. I have confidence in him and any future treatment that he considers necessary. The office staff was pleasant and efficient. I highly recommend him.

Jenny Scholz

“Friendly, Helpful & Caring”

I met with Dr. Gen 2 weeks ago reference to symptoms I have had over a year. I showed him photos of myself sweating and drained before a short walk then after. It was a cool, overcast day so I was not warm. He ordered a nuclear stress test which I had today. Both Dr. Gen and the staff are very kind, friendly, helpful, and caring. I am happy to be a patient at this office.
